The Society as we know it today was inaugurated in 1898, although there had been a Literary Institute in the town for many years before that date.
The Society has continued to flourish and since the inauguration the speakers have covered a variety of subjects including literature, travel, music and history. Some of the outstanding speakers who have visited the Society are the former hostage Terry Waite; the explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes; the author of the ‘Morse' books, Colin Dexter; the former Governor of the Falkland Islands Sir Rex Hunt; the wildlife conservationist Virginia McKenna; and the astronomer Patrick Moore.
Meetings are held at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month from October to May,
The subscription is £30 to include all 8 lectures, or admission to a single lecture is £10 payable on the door. Enquiries to Jane Malden - tel: 01372 727918 or email email@example.com
